🎉 Team Spotlight: Kara Meet Kara, a member of our Entertainment Team, helping coordinate all the incredible programming you’ll see at Omatsuri! A favourite memory: “I have always loved bringing friends to Omatsuri to show and share with them my love for Japanese culture, arts, food and more! Seeing their eyes light up the first time they try Okonomiyaki, or watching them bop along to Taiko, always resonates with me. These are memories I cherish.” What she wishes more people knew: “Omatsuri is for everyone! It’s a great exploration into a new culture, and the community is there to welcome everyone with open arms.” What keeps her coming back: “The ability to experience Japanese culture authentically in Canada. This is one of the few opportunities to learn more and be immersed in the culture, and that is truly special.” What surprised her the first time: “The food! I had never known there were so many places doing authentic Japanese food in Calgary. Also the people I’ve met and the relationships I’ve built, just from chatting with others who are as immersed in the experience as you.” Thank you, Kara, for helping bring Omatsuri’s programming to life!

✨ Behind Omatsuri: the people who make it possible “So many dedicated hours of hard work, the result of which is a festival Calgarians of all ages can enjoy and learn a little more about Japanese and Japanese-Canadian culture.” — Kiyomi, Food Vendor Lead Kiyomi is proud to be part of the Calgary Japanese Community, and sees Omatsuri as a true example of everything that community means. It’s a festival built by an incredible number of volunteers, from the organizing committee and sub-committees, to performers, demonstrators, community members staffing tables, registration, and booths, to the teams behind set up and take down. Through the festival, that sense of community doesn’t stay contained. It extends outward to neighbours, friends, and families who keep coming back year after year to share in all things Japanese. With so much to see, do, and eat, no two years are ever quite the same. Thank you, Kiyomi, for everything you do to make it possible. 🤍 #yycevents #calgaryevents #yyclifestyle #calgaryliving #calgarynow

✨ Behind Omatsuri: the people who make it possible “Shared celebration. That collective joy you can’t create alone.” — Chris, CJCA Secretary, Indoor Vendor Lead Chris has been part of Omatsuri for years, watching it grow from the inside. Some of his most memorable moments were the Ainu cultural performances from years past, a reminder of the depth of experience Omatsuri has always offered. As Indoor Vendor Lead, he helps shape the festival floor that so many of us walk through each year. And his vision for Omatsuri’s future is ambitious: to see it stand alongside the Calgary Stampede, Otafest, and the Lilac Festival as one of the city’s great events. That’s the kind of passion that keeps Omatsuri moving forward. Thank you, Chris, for everything you do to make it possible. 🤍 #calgaryevents #yycevents #omatsuri2026 #calgaryjapanese #15yearsofomatsuri

We recently hosted a Japanese Cultural Experience event for Grade 8 students from a local school ☺️ A total of 80 students participated, and with volunteers included, we had over 100 people at the centre—making it a very lively and busy day! Students rotated through three interactive stations: • Shodo (Japanese calligraphy) • Okonomiyaki cooking • Traditional Japanese games Despite being a weekday morning—and our first time running this type of program—we were initially unsure how everything would come together. Thanks to the incredible support and teamwork of our volunteers, the event was a great success. Most importantly, the students had a fantastic time exploring Japanese culture, which made all the hard work worth it. It was definitely a lot of effort… but a very rewarding experience 😂 A big thank you to everyone who helped make this event possible! Mami Japanese Calligraphy:Eishun-Sho Artworks

Big news for our community 🇯🇵❤️ This past weekend at @sumofestyyc , the federal government and @calgaryjapanese announced over $4.4M in funding for the new Japanese Community Centre in Calgary through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program. For those who may not know, the Calgary Japanese Community Association currently owns both its cultural centre and the adjacent 4-plex housing. While the space has served us well, it’s nearing the end of its life cycle—and our community has continued to grow beyond it. This new Net-Zero Carbon Cultural Centre is a huge step forward 🌱 ✨ Larger event spaces for classes, performances, and celebrations 🍱 A commercial kitchen for cultural programming 📚 A library + 🌿 a barrier-free Japanese garden 🧘 A tatami room for traditional experiences like tea ceremonies 🏠 doubling current housing that supports community Designed by CJCA member @henrytsangarchitect and @moda_yyc , the space incorporates Japanese concepts like wabi-sabi and ma—blending tradition with sustainability in a truly thoughtful way. This isn’t just a building. It’s a place that honours the deep roots of Japanese Canadians in Southern Alberta, while creating space for future generations to gather, learn, and thrive together. If you’d like to learn more, or are interested in leaving your own legacy as part of this project, we’d love to hear from you. And if you’re visiting the centre, don’t forget to check out the tip tap to support 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♂️

We were honoured to attend the official reception hosted by the Consulate-General of Japan in Calgary. Moments like these reflect the heart of our Japanese Canadian community, the relationships we nurture, the traditions we carry forward, and the friendship that continues to grow between Japan and Canada. Seeing our members, families, partners, and supporters gathered together reminds us why our work matters: to create spaces where culture is shared, connections are strengthened, and community thrives🇯🇵🇨🇦 天皇誕生日祝賀レセプションに出席致しました。

✨ Giving Tuesday: Help Build the CJCA Legacy ✨ LINK IN BIO! The Calgary Japanese Community Association (CJCA) has been a home for generations — from early Japanese Canadians to newcomers today. Our 1950-built centre has served us well, but it’s time for a new chapter. 🏯💫 We’re building a new purpose-built Cultural Hub that reflects core Japanese values like shibusa, wabi-sabi, kizuna, and wa. This future space will be a vibrant home for our current community programs — from taiko, dance, language exchanges, education programs and Kotobuki seniors. ❤️ Our vision includes: • Dedicated space for CJCA programs & events • Rentals for the wider Calgary community • Accessible seniors apartments & visitor accommodations • A sustainable, net-zero carbon ready design ♻️ • Inclusive, barrier-free spaces guided by RHF Accessibility Certification We’ve already secured unanimous City approval — and construction is planned for Fall 2026. 🙌 But to make this vision real, we need your support this Giving Tuesday. Every contribution helps preserve culture, strengthen intergenerational ties, and build a sustainable, inclusive future for our community. 🌱✨ 👉 Donate here: https://calgaryjca.com/legacy-project/ or link in our bio ! (Please note: CJCA is not a registered charity and cannot issue tax receipts.) If you are interested in leaving a larger legacy and exploring significant naming or sponsorship opportunities, please do not hesitate to reach out to us directly. Thank you for being part of our history — and our future. ❤️ With gratitude, The CJCA Board of Directors
